As you know, we love to see gates with hardware in place (you can only stare at stock photos for so long!), so we reached out to one of our Portland-area customers recently and were delighted to see his gate in person and learn a little more about the projects they have planned and worked on.
Ru and his wife purchased a home in NE Portland about a year ago. From the sounds of it, it had metal siding and was in pretty sad shape. Upon replacing the siding and repainting, they elected to adorn the property with copper – rain chains, gutters and light fixtures – all a stunning complement to their blue paint, not to mention a bright pop in often gray Portland.
Part of their renovations included removing a sagging side gate and replacing it with a beauty from James Lasof Carpentry and Peter Drake. For the gate hardware, they selected dark bronze.
Since bronze doesn’t contain any elements that can rust, this hardware is good to go for the long term. Over time you can see a green patina (on the copper component), but you won’t see rust. Bronze has a living finish that is never pristine. It’s always reacting to its environment in beautiful and unique ways.
And steeple-tipped heavy duty hinges!
Ru’s gate swings out toward the driveway because of steps leading to the back door inside the gate. The two-sided thumb latch is a nice choice for outswinging gates because it looks nice from both sides! We so appreciate Ru choosing high quality hardware (cause we all know life’s too short for crummy hardware!) and taking the time to share their plans for the home – including a ‘new’ old fashioned wooden garage door. They also recently installed a new front storm door, also from James Lasof Carpentry – check it out!
