Jamb On It| A Masterclass in Hanging a Gate Between Two Walls
When a customer submitted these photos for our monthly drawing, we jumped on the opportunity to write a longer blog post pointing out some best practices for hanging a gate between two non-wood objects (columns, walls, etc).
WHY do you want to install wood jambs?
In short, it makes everything easier for you and your installer. The wood jambs are smooth and uniform, so you can install hinges and a gate latch to them easily.
Step 1: Install wood jambs to the wall/column.
The ones in the photo are 2×6’s and that’s plenty. You may be able to get by with a 2×4 depending on your gate thickness.
So what is involved in installing wood jambs? Not much. You cut a length and bolt it to the wall/column. Because every wall/column is different, you and your installer should choose the right method to bolt them. You’ll need a jamb on each side of the opening.
Note in the photos that these jambs were cut flat at the top and bottom. Some people choose to give the jamb a profile if it helps with the design.
Step 2: Install your hinges and gate to the jamb.
Step 2.5 (optional): Install wood stops (if using).
Step 3: Install your latch to the gate.
