Comparing Sheens: Nero Latch vs. Midnight Black Hardware

When it comes to black hardware, not all finishes are created equal. We often get questions from customers about how our different black finishes work together, especially when they’re used close to one another on the same gate. The image is a helpful visual reference.

On the left, you’ll see our Nero Latch, which—along with other satin black products we carry—has a 20% sheen. This gives it a smooth, satin finish with a slight luster. On the right is a Forever Hardware deadbolt in Midnight Black, which has a much more matte appearance, with a 10% sheen.

If you’re installing a latch and a deadbolt right next to each other, as shown here, the sheen difference is likely to stand out. The Nero’s satin finish will catch light a bit more, whereas the Midnight Black will read more as a flat black. For some, that contrast could be a dealbreaker. For others, it may feel like an intentional design choice.

When it comes to combining a latch with hinges, though, the difference is often much less noticeable. Hinges tend to be further from eye level and aren’t as closely scrutinized—especially on darker-stained gates—so the sheen variation may not matter as much.

Ultimately, it comes down to what matters most to you. We always recommend ordering samples when you’re unsure—our goal is to help you get it right the first time.
